In close collaboration with Sally Goldman and Penny O’Toole, Reinette played a key role in shaping the Berlut Maths Grades 4-6 series. Sally and Penny developed the mathematical content, while Reinette conceptualised and structured the layout and directed the image selection and placement, establishing the series’ cohesive visual identity.
After qualifying at UCT, Sally taught in a number of public and private schools in the Durban area from 1982-2017. Most of this time was in a nationally top-regarded independent girls’ school, where she first taught generalist subjects from Grades 4-8. The last 10 years in this job, she headed up the Senior Primary Maths Department as a subject specialist. Her particular interest and expertise is in higher-order thinking and problem-solving.
Penny’s teaching journey started with primary and high school Mathematics and Science. After a few years exploring other careers, she gravitated back to teaching in Senior Primary and found her calling. She was part of the management teams in heading up academics in the two independent schools where she spent many fulfilling years. Her first love has always been Maths, with the mission to prepare children of all abilities adequately for the demands of High School Mathematics.
